Mid-century modern recliner chair in very good original condition. Scandinavian or Danish style, nice quality black leatherette (vinyl), solid wood arms with tight joinery, metal springs and adjustment mechanism, all in very good working order.
American designer Milo Baughman designed recliners like this, and this may actually be a Baughman design as many iterations of his recliner designs were produced, this looks very similar to his designs. No brand or maker marks are found on this chair other than the patent number shown in the photo which relates to the recliner locking mechanism. The recliner locking mechanism (small knob at the side) is really great.
It can be locked in several positions for just the right tilt, or left unlocked to allow for a rocking chair type motion which is spring assisted. One photo shows the chair fully reclined. The leg rest slides in and out by hand and has a very sleek unobtrusive design compared to others which fold and hang below the seat, this one totally disappears into the bottom of the seat cushion. The headrest pillow is very comfortable and can be flipped over the back if not needed. Slight normal wear on the beautiful solid wood arms have left a nice patina, cushions are very comfortable, and leatherette is remarkably good for a chair of this age.
There is some very minor damage in 4 areas shown in the last 4 photos - 1 small slit in backrest panel, 2 a few small slits in headrest, 3 small tear at rear top corner, 4 seat springs have cause subtle indentation marks on the footrest extension piece at the innermost end which is rarely seen. Seat height from ground 15. Back height from top of seat 31. Back width at top 20. Arm height from ground 19.5.
Arm width at widest point 2.5. Patent Info: 2,797,737. Original Assignee Johnson Hinge Co Inc. LOCK FOR PLATFORM ROCKERS Filed April 8, 1954.
