Harold Liebmann was born "Arthur Hans Otto Liebmann" in 1895, in Leipzig, Germany. He studied art in Weimar, Germany, and trained horses in the German Army during WWI. Following WWI, he studied with André Derain in Paris.

Also a talented dancer, in 1931 Liebmann and his second wife, Lola Meyer, devised a dance routine, "The Dance of the Cobra", which they performed throughout Europe and the Americas for the next two decades. Liebmann was often quoted as saying, I dance so that I can paint. He always carried drawing materials and he made thousands of drawings as he traveled and performed.

His subjects include vaudeville scenes, dancers, figures, landscapes, both domestic and wild animals (especially horses). Stylistically his paintings reflect the Fauvist influences of Derain. Later in 1938 they were released and by the fall of 1938 they were in America where they remained until after the end of WWII.

In 1941 Liebmann and his wife became US residents and in 1944 they bought a home on 170 acres in Hannacroix, NY, with the proceeds from "Variety Time" and "Pan-Americana, " two movies they made with RKO. In 1948 Liebmann's villa at Opatija was seized by the Croatian government, along with three hundred of his pre-1937 paintings, all of which have disappeared. Liebmann's lifetime production of paintings is estimated to be approximately 1,000. Toward the end of his career he experimented with adding sand to his paintings to give them texture; he produced a series of mural-like panels in concrete; and he developed a puppet theatre whose characters were made from everyday household items, and whose performances can be tracked for a number of years. He also produced a quantity of ceramic plaques, figurines, and other items. 1945 - Exhibition, American Water Color Society, National Academy Galleries, NY. 1947 - Exhibition, Catskill Arts & Crafts Guild, Hudson, NY. 1948 - Exhibition, Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany, NY. 1950 - Exhibition, Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany, NY.
